Gorillaz and the Pixies Latest to cancel Concert In Israel

Tel Aviv’s Pic.Nic festival will have to do without several bands this week, including second-night headliners the Pixies, Billboard reports. A rep for the iconic alt-rock foursome provide EW with the following statement:
It is with great regret that we announce today of the Pixies’ decision to cancel their appearance on June 5 in Israel at this time.
The decision was not reached easily, and we all know well the Israeli fans have been waiting for this visit for far too long.
We’d like to extend our deepest apologies to the fans, but events beyond all our control have conspired against us. We can only hope for better days, in which we will finally present the long awaited visit of the Pixies in Israel.
The band did not specifically acknowledge last Monday’s Israeli commando naval raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship, which resulted in nine deaths and sparked a significant global outcry, though Billboard says the festival’s organizers have acknowledged that the band’s decision is related to those events.
Damon Albarn’s virtual band of cartoon misfits Gorillaz also pulled out of the event, as did UK nu-rave outfit Klaxons. Upcoming concert appearances in Tel Aviv from the likes of Elton John, Jethro Tull, DJ Shadow and Mike Patton are still scheduled to go on as planned.

Gorillaz Release "On Melancholy Hill"

(RTTNews) -  Gorillaz has just released a new single, "On Melancholy Hill," a track off of their third studio album, Plastic Beach. The song has been called "uplifting," even though the title of the track clearly denotes a dismal tone. It's supposedly about reflecting on what it would be like to endure an apocalypse with that one special someone. Plastic Beach's first single was "Stylo." The album was released this past March. The English virtual band is stepping in for U2 on June 25 as the Friday night headliner at Glastonbury due to Bono's emergency back surgery. After band members Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett wished Bono "all the best" and expressed their exuberance for being given the chance to play the renowned festival. Buy Gorillaz Tickets & Sell Gorillaz Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com. Gorillaz Release ‘On Melancholy Hill’ Single

When it was announced that U2 had to bow out as the Friday night headliner for Glastonbury due to Bono’s emergency back surgery, fans in the UK were left with a pretty great consolation prize: Gorillaz would be stepping in for the Irish rockers. Now, to celebrate the cartoon band’s only UK festival appearance of 2010, masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have decided to release ‘On Melancholy Hill’ as the second single from ‘Plastic Beach.’ The news comes just after Albarn wished Bono “all the best” and expressed his excitement at being given the opportunity to play the legendary festival. To see a live performance of ‘On Melancholy Hill’ and Gorillaz’s first hit, ‘Clint Eastwood,’ check out the video below. Buy Gorillaz Tickets & Sell Gorillaz Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com. Why Gorillaz weren't playing Glastonbury?

Perhaps the question isn't "are Gorillaz the right band to replace U2?", but "why weren't they there in the first place?" Having been around for three critically lauded, multi-platinum albums, it seems incredible that Damon Albarn's animated supergroup have been signed up for huge foreign festivals like Roskilde in Denmark and Coachella in California, but never before for Glastonbury.
Albarn memorably headlined last year with a reformed Blur, which might be the reason Gorillaz weren't originally signed up, but they're so far away from the nostalgia of his old band that it doesn't matter. They're enjoyed by a broad fanbase – from pre-teens taken in by Jamie Hewlett's illustrations to Fall fans enjoying Mark E Smith's contribution to Plastic Beach.
The rarity of Gorillaz tour dates in recent years makes them an even more enticing prospect than U2. Since a 2001 tour, the 1 million-plus Britons who bought their second album Demon Days have had few chances to see them in the non-animated flesh besides a few shows at the Manchester International Festival in 2007 and a tiny fan club tour earlier this year. Demand is so high that during the FA Cup final ITV was airing adverts for the ticket pre-sale of their autumn arena tour.
When the band played the Roundhouse, London, last month they assembled almost all the guests on Plastic Beach, including Bobby Womack, De La Soul and Gruff Rhys. Given that the most notable absentee from those gigs – Snoop Dogg – is fourth on the Pyramid stage, festivalgoers can expect a smörgasbord of special guests.
The Gorillaz house band is just as impressive, with old hands Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash (dressed as rascal sailors) bringing Plastic Beach tracks like Glitter Freeze and Superfast Jellyfish to menacing life. And that's without even mentioning Hewlett's animated backing videos.
And if that isn't enough, as their anthem Clint Eastwood reminds us, they've got sunshine in a bag.

Gorillaz to replace U2 at Glastonbury - ticket holders rejoice

Gorillaz have been revealed as the new Friday night Glasto headliners after U2 pulled out of the festival yesterday. Damon Albarn's cartoon hip hop/pop band are likely to be a popular replacement for the Irish rockers and will bring with them a host of collaborators including Mos Def, Snoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder. "This is going to be Gorilllaz' only UK festival appearance, and it'll be a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid on the Friday night, with Muse, then Stevie Wonder to follow," said Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis. Murdoc from Gorillaz added: "We're like some great big horrible warship pulling in to the Bay of Glastonbury to save the day. It was us or The Beatles and they split up years ago. "The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it's up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out. I can assure you though, I'm bringing extra troops. Loads of them. Glastonbury will be ours...cutlasses drawn, trumpets ready. We're coming in..." Buy Gorillaz Tickets & Sell Gorillaz Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com.
