Gorillaz in the midst of bizarre musical journey

'I ain't happy, I'm feelin' glad/I got sunshine in a bag/I'm useless, but not for long the future is comin' on," sang Damon Albarn on Gorillaz hit Clint Eastwood in 2001. When quizzed once what kind of sunshine was in the bag, he replied: "I don't know that we can answer that one for you. That's top secret. That's the kind of information governments don't give out until 50 years after."
Albarn and Jamie Hewlett -- the Blur singer and the iconic comic book designer respectively -- are two cheeky monkeys with attitude and ideas all their own. Former flatmates, they started Gorillaz in 1998 as a sort of anti-band. Well, it was a virtual band made of post-nuclear cartoon characters.
"I think you really have to concern yourself with providing alternatives," he said of his fake band (doubtless an alternative to fake culture). Their videos are full of bizarre but cool fictional cartoon avatars with sad, troubled faces. When Hewlett and Albarn get together their faces are rarely sad or troubled, primarily because they are too busy laughing their heads off at each other.
Interviewed together by a New York magazine earlier this year about their new album Plastic Beach, the banter between the two was infectious and, not surprisingly, a little left of centre. Hewlett, who drew all the characters for the album's visuals and videos, was reminded that when Demon Days, Gorillaz's 2005 album, was released he said he was tired of drawing the characters.
" I was a little tired of it and needed to go away and try something else. So we went and did Monkey: Journey to the West and travelled around China and produced an opera." The badinage that ensued says something about the creative synergy between the two in the Gorillaz ...
Albarn: "A sort of opera. Not really an opera opera."
Hewlett: "It has elements of opera."
Albarn: "Fine, a popera. What do you want to call it?"
Hewlett: "An experience."
Albarn: "No, I don't want to call it an experience."
Hewlett: "Well, that's why I called it an opera."
Albarn: "Okay, a flopera."
What originally started out as Albarn and Hewlett's multimedia project in 1998 has grown exponentially into something huge -- definitely not a flopera -- both in scope and popularity.
When U2 had to pull out of the Glastonbury festival headline spot during the summer, Gorillaz were drafted in to replace them on the main stage. Last month I saw them headline Benicassim in Valencia, Spain, in front of 30,000 people on a hot Sunday night. It was an ambitious but ultimately enthralling show: equal parts futuristic jamboree and genre-mashing pop extravaganza. With the former Clash men Mick Jones and Paul Simonon on either of side of him -- on guitar and bass respectively -- Albarn started the show with a video montage featuring Snoop Dogg singing Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach. A gargantuan video screen above the band showed cartoon images which were linked to the songs throughout. Gorillaz were then joined onstage, for various songs, by De La Soul, Bobby Womack, the Syrian National Orchestra, Bootie Brown and a quartet of female cello players in standard-issue sailor outfits.
Shaun Ryder, Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys and Mark E Smith appear overhead on videos and in the mix on samples. They played many songs from their glorious new album, Plastic Beach, which is 'sing-a-long-a' in places and outright difficult in others, but worth the effort in the end. Damon gives the Eighties-sounding On Melancholy Hill echoes of a Scott Walker: "So call in the submarine/ 'round the world will go/does anybody know/if we're looking out on the day."
Lou Reed is his usual dry-voiced self on Some Kind of Nature ("Well, me, I like plastics and digital foils"). Bobby Womack delivers soul-god emotion on Stylo and Cloud of Unknowing. Snoop Dogg's does his stoned rap on Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach and rhymes "in focus" with "the world is so hopeless". The album overall has a theme of New Age doom, about the planet and the ocean in particular.
"If you meditate on plastic or the sea," said Albarn recently. "I think all the songs kind of fit into that in one way or another. And then we kind of developed it and situated the new Gorillaz 'base' at Point Nemo -- the most remote island on earth -- and alluded to the fact that the plastic detritus in the Pacific Ocean had all collected. It's gentle, it has environmental thoughts scattered and peppered around every bit of this record. But at the end of the day, it's not just that. It's in a way more colourful than that."
Gorillaz play the O2 Arena on November 11, tickets priced €59.80.

My Fantasy Band: George Craig, One Night Only

Vocals - Colin Blunstone
He is the lead singer of the Zombies and I just love his voice, it's really breathy and so nice to listen to. Lyrically, he sings really sweet, nice love songs. They're a very feel-good band.
Rapping - Snoop Dogg
Just to mix it up a bit I want to throw in Snoop Dogg; I think he can make anything sound cool. I saw him at Glastonbury, he walks on stage and is just the coolest guy. When he came on with Gorillaz, he turned that whole set around for me. I was feeling a bit bored and he just turned it into gold dust. It's like that Katy Perry song, "California Gurls"; it's great when he comes in.
Guitar - Jimmy Page and Prince
I struggled with this one. But I've decided on Jimmy Page and Prince. I can't choose one because they're my two favourites. Prince has really cool guitars and they are all custom made, and Page melts your face off with awesome solos. I hope that doesn't sound too cheesy.
Bass - Pete Wentz
I want Fall Out Boy's bassist because I really like his stage moves. He would mix it up a bit in the band and add a bit of an alternative vibe. I love all the crazy dancing he does, too.
Drums - Keith Moon
On tour I would imagine he would be a barrel of laughs and there would be loads of really funny moments. He's a drummer that you can listen to and know who it is. He's got his own style, his stage presence is awesome, he's a real character, a fun person and an amazing drummer.
Dancing - Shakira
Let's throw Shakira in to do some sexy dancing. I saw her at Glastonbury as well, I didn't love it but I think she's so hot. All the guys were enjoying it.

Listen to Gorillaz Live on the Radio

Didn’t know cartoons got up early enough for Morning Becomes Eclectic. Gorillaz were gracious enough to shake the sleep out of their illustrated eyes for a session on KCRW. Worth listening to if only for the undeniably catchy and great “On Melancholy Hill.” If we lived in California, we’d get stuck in traffic on purpose to listen to this live on the radio. Ok, maybe not

Gorillaz – Escape to Plastic Beach released on iPhone

We first reported on the Linkin Park app, and now it is the turn of the Gorillaz to cash in on a videogame-hungry audience in Gorillaz – Escape to Plastic Beach for iPhone. Developed using Unity, a popular 3D interactive content platform, Gorillaz – Escape to Plastic Beach has players gliding above Plastic Beach HQ on a Doom Glider as Murdoc, blasting away, in an attempt to foil 2D’s repeated attempts to escape. Not only that, numerous ghost pirate ships must be destroyed, and plenty of other hazards and obstacles across the game’s 8 levels must be avoided. If you happen to like the Gorillaz, you may be pleased to know the band’s new single, Super Fast Jellyfish, provides the soundtrack, and the band members themselves have lent their actual grunts for the voiceovers.
Other notable features include design work from Jamie Hewlett, designer of the Gorillaz, the impressive 3D visuals, and possibly sunshine in a bag. “Branded games are vital new revenue streams for the music industry and EMI has been a pioneer in the field – witness the success of the campaign we worked on with them for Lily Allen, for example,” said Jeff Coghlan, Founder and Managing Director of Matmi. David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies, added, “It's exciting to observe how Unity gets adopted outside of the core games industry. The music, film and advertising industries are broadly adopting games and game technology to reach wildly broad game-loving audiences.”
Gorillaz – Escape to Plastic Beach is available now for £1.19, on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Syria is one of Israel's strongest opponents, and supports a number of armed groups that carry out attacks against the state.

Gorillaz 'Polish Up' Old Tracks

Animated band Gorillaz have joked having live musicians on stage is ''a mistake'', as they aren't as good looking as their cartoon counterparts. Gorillaz have joked that having live band members on stage doesn't work, as their cartoon forms are better looking. The group did away with their animated alter egos for their recent live performances - with frontman Damon Albarn and the rest of the band joined by a string of guest vocalists - but bassist Murdoc Niccals thinks they made a mistake. Murdoc - who is a cartoon mouthpiece for the 'Dare' hitmakers - said: "We've gone through so many incarnations live. At one point we appeared as holograms, but that didn't really work. This time the live musicians were visible, which I think is a big mistake because they're not as good looking as the real Gorillaz. But I guess you have to change things around a bit."

He explained the group plan to revisit some of their old tracks for their two-night stint at London's O2 Arena in November. Murdoc added to Shop magazine: "Anything's possible. Who knows what'll wash-up on these shores live. I think we'll rework some of the material from the first album, polish up some tracks from 'Demon Days' and then unleash our latest glorious behemoth 'Plastic Beach'."
Damon recently blamed the band's poor reviews for their recent performance at Glastonbury festival on the group lacking human interaction.
He said: "We were yet to change the dynamic entirely from the cartoon band acting purely as a film orchestra into something that had more of a human element to it."

Electric Fest loses Gorillaz Sound Stage

The Electric Mountain Music Festival has been shortened to two days instead of three. Organizers for the new music fest say the cancellation of Gorillaz Sound System as headliners means it will make more sense to have a two-day event. “They cancelled their whole North American tour,” said Meghan Edmonson, spokesperson for the music festival. “Unfortunately, that’s the way the game works sometimes and there’s nothing we can really do about it.”
DJ Kofi, who “helms” the group, announced his plans to go back into the recording studio conflicted with performance dates, including that of the Electric Mountain Music Festival.
Edmonson said the main reason for shortening the festival to two days is because it will likely be difficult to find another act to fill the spot of Gorillaz Sound System.
“They said, ‘We’ll just cut the day and make the two days more action packed.’”
Gates open at the festival site on Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. and the music gets going at 3 p.m. until 8 a.m. on Sept. 6.
Organizers expect between 300 and 800 tickets to be sold for the first of what they intend to be an annual event.

Arabian heights: Gorillaz stage historic gig in Syria

From the moment Snoop Dogg's face appeared on two giant television screens at the back of the stage, set against the walls of the historic 11th-century Damascus Citadel, the Syrian crowd knew they were about to experience something never before seen in their country.
Gorillaz are the biggest western act ever to play Syria, and the several-thousand-strong crowd were never going to be disappointed. The atmosphere for the gig was aided by a full moon and fuelled by teenage Syrians telling me: "We're here to see Gorillaz, man."
A surreal evening of music and visuals had the locals captivated: female violinists from the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music, decked out in sailor hats and swaying to a hip-hop beat, were accompanied by background footage of Bruce Willis shooting at Murdoc. The haunting duo of Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn made it less like a concert and more of an experience for the Syrian audience, who perhaps didn't know regular concerts are not supposed to be this diverse.
Playing in Damascus clearly meant much to Albarn. "For the whole country I'm not sure this [concert] means anything at all," he told me, before the gig. "For us, I do think it is an important thing by virtue of being pretty much the first western act to arrive in Damascus."
Albarn said he wasn't sure how the multi-genre concert would be received in Syria, a country where exposure to western music is confined to satellite TV channels and two radio stations. Later on, his relief was visibly clear in the enthusiasm with which he waved a huge flag over the heads of fans, feeding off their adoration. Albarn admitted he should have interacted more with the crowd at Glastonbury – a mistake he didn't repeat in Damascus.
A 23-year-old Syrian man, still hanging around 30 minutes after the gig, told me: "I came here because it's the biggest concert we have had, and I wanted to welcome them to my country. We need more of this."
Until now, major western artists haven't considered visiting Syria on tour. While this historical gig cannot be repeated, the door has been opened for others to follow. For the Syrian orchestra, topping Glastonbury may be difficult, but these Syrian musicians are set for international success.
Eslam Jawaad, the Syrian-Lebanese rapper, closed the night in fitting fashion. Sporting a Syrian flag tucked down the back of his T-shirt, Jawaad rapped the final verse of Clint Eastwood in Arabic to the obvious pleasure and definite surprise of the crowd.

Tickets on sale now from Ticketmaster.
Press Release:
Gorillaz Confirm Special Guests
The cat’s out of the bag and it’s no longer a secret. Yes, the rumours were true… on Thursday 22nd August, Chugg Entertainment confirmed that Gorillaz will be making their first ever trip to Australasia for their arena tour in December 2010.
As part of their Plastic Beach world tour, Gorillaz will be playing 20 shows across North America and 10 nights in Europe before going to Asia for the first time ever, and then heading south for the winter where their journey will conclude with a string of dynamic shows in Australia and New Zealand.
Longtime Murdoc Niccals delegates, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have created a live show around the band’s three records, their very first being a headline performance at the Coachella Festival in USA in April of this year which was met with overwhelming praise. They’ve since gone on to play in front of hordes of fans in their headlining appearances at Glastonbury, Roskilde in Denmark and Benicassim in Spain, and in late July became the first major Western band to play in Syria when they played the ancient Citadel in Damascus, following a sold at show at the Byblos Festival in Beirut.
The live show is a wild and organic experience, with the Gorillaz band holding things down behind many featured artists and video animation, artwork and stage design by Gorillaz director and collaborator Jamie Hewlett. While Gorillaz members Murdoc Niccals and Co have so far been thwarted in their attempts to appear on stage, the Gorillaz live band includes Damon Albarn, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon (The Clash), Mike Smith, Cass Browne, Jeff Wootton and Gabriel Manuals Wallace, as well as additional backing singers, brass sections and a full string ensemble. Confirmed special guests on their Australasian jaunt include De La Soul, Hypnotic Brass, Bobby Womack, the Syrian National Orchestra of Arabic Music, Bootie Brown, Little Dragon and Rosile Wilson. With more guests to be announced soon…
Gorillaz released their third album Plastic Beach in March of this year. The album swept charts around the world with fantastic reviews across the board. Gorillaz characters Murdoc, Noodle, 2D and Russell Hobbs escaped the underworld Kong Studio – home to previous Gorillaz multi platinum chart toppers Demon Days and Gorillaz – to set up shop on a remote island in the Pacific. Lead by Stylo (the video starring Bruce Willis), the album features the tracks Superfast Jelly Fish (feat. De La Soul), Rhinestone Eyes and Melancholy Hill, the first commercial single from Plastic Beach, which is available in Australia now digitally.
Tickets start at $99.90 for Silver, $119.90 for Gold and for $295 fans can get the VIP package which includes one premium reserved ticket located close to the stage or one GA ticket, specially designed Gorillaz concert shirt, limited edition print (numbered and exclusive to VIP packages only), official Gorillaz tour laminate and an exclusive Gorillaz sew-on patch.
Do not delay in securing your tickets to see this monumental live event!

Gorillaz Brings All Stars To Australia

Gorillaz's third studio offering, Plastic Beach, revolved around a dystopian junk world composed entirely of consumer runoff and featured eclectic guest contributions from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Mark E. Smith, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, De La Soul and Little Dragon. It was a typically frenetic affair and with the announcement of the band's debut live performance in Australia, fans were left wondering who exactly would join Damon Albarn in Australia.
Well wonder no more because it has just been announced that De La Soul, Hypnotic Brass, Bobby Womack, the Syrian National Orchestra of Arabic Music, Bootie Brown, Little Dragon and Rosile Wilson will be joining visual mastermind Jamie Hewlett, fronman Albarn and mainstay live players Mick Jones and Paul Simonon (that's one half of The Clash to you), Mike Smith, Cass Browne, Jeff Wootton and Gabriel Manuals Wallace in their inaugural trip down under.

Gorillaz Talk Plans For 'Dynamic' North American Tour

Back in April, Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlettswore they'd be bringing the band back to the U.S. for a full tour, "if they want us." And it would appear the demand is there, because just last week, they announced plans for a very large-scale tour, which includes a lengthy run of shows in North America.
And while we already know that the shows will not include any of the 3-D elements they'd tinkered with in the past, details on what fans can expect remain slim. But, from the sound of things, the gigs will resemble the ones the Gorillaz played earlier this year at Coachella and in London.
With a few additions, of course. Because back then, the band — and most of the European continent — were still dealing with the travel-foiling effects ofIceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
"[It'll be] the same show, maybe some different songs in the set, some of the other collaborators who will be able to make it," Hewlett told MTV News back in April. "We lost loads of people to the volcano — we didn't losethem; they couldn't get on their flight — we were missing Kano and Bashy, Mos Def was in London. The Hypnotic Brass couldn't get there."
"The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will add another fantastic dynamic to the whole show," Albarn added.
So, free of all that volcanic ash, the Gorillaz are pressing full steam ahead with the tour, which is scheduled to hit North America in October. Tickets for all gigs go on sale in early-to-mid-August. For more information, check out Gorillaz.com.
